I wanted to practice my wedding photography skills away from the pressure of photographing a real wedding, so with the help of my amazing assistant, we put together a lovely at-home, bohemian wedding and got two models to pose. Ariel, who moonlights as my assistant, is actually a talented wedding coordinator with Graceful Wedding Management. Having her as my assistant when I'm shooting weddings is a huge bonus, because Ariel knows exactly how the day should run. For this shoot, Ariel found the venue, did all the decorations, and helped me pose the models. Yes, yes, yes, she is in fact awesome, if I haven't mentioned that.
A big thanks goes to Ashley and Murry for agreeing to model! Another big thank you is owed to Ann and Joe Harwell for letting us use their lovely Wendell home.
Why are these types of shoots important, one may ask. The reason is simple. I firmly believe that practice makes perfect. While I get plenty of practice during real weddings, this shoot allowed me to be more relaxed and creative. Plus, most Photographers have an ideal wedding scenario they'd love to shoot, and for me this would be that ideal scenario.
It rained like crazy all day. We almost canceled the shoot. But because North Carolina weather is absolutely unpredictable, we decided to go through with it. It poured as we set everything up, but when Ashley showed up ready to model, the rain stopped. We had a reprieve for almost an hour during which I was able to photograph Ashley alone, then it poured again as we waited for the groom. When Murry arrived, it was still raining a little, so we took the table shots of the bride and groom and their cake. The gorgeous antique chinaware was graciously provided by the homeowners. When it finally stopped raining, we moved to the backyard for some couples photos.
Despite the rain, it was a fantastic shoot. I am so pleased with the images I captured. I hope to be able to put another one of these shoots together in the near future to practice different scenarios and continue growing as a photographer.
